Sidewalk Days returning to downtown Duluth, traffic impacted

Final preperations underway for Duluth’s Sidewalk Days

Downtown Duluth's Sidewalk Days kicks off Wednesday, July 10th. Melissa Latour joined Good Morning Northland to preview all the fun festivities that are in store for the week.

The annual Sidewalk Days Festival is returning to Duluth on July 10, 11, and 12.

“This year features over 100 vendors, busking throughout the day, amazing deals, mouth-watering food and loads of fun for the whole family,” explained Melissa LaTour, the special events coordinator with Downtown Duluth. “This festival attracts tourists and residents city-wide, providing a bustling atmosphere where there is something for everyone.”

Sidewalk Days will be spread across 6 city blocks on Superior St., from 1st Avenue East to 5th Avenue West.

On top of the vendors, Sidewalk Days will also feature a series of special events.

“Some of the special attractions at this year’s festival include the Kolar Chevrolet Buick GMC Classic Car Show, the 16th Annual Sidewalk Shuffle 5K, activities with the Duluth Children’s Museum, bouncy house and inflatable obstacle course, skating demos from Damage Boardshop and the Harbor City Roller Derby, Sea Smoke Aerialists, balloon fun from Lauralloons, and music to keep you movin’ and groovin’ from block to block,” explained LaTour.

The daily hours are as follows:

  • Wednesday, July 10 from 10am-8pm with the Kolar Chevrolet Buick GMC Classic Car Show happening from 5pm-8pm.
  • Thursday, July 11 from 10am-6pm, extending one hour later for fun, shopping and happy hour
  • Friday, July 12 from 10am-3pm.

Additional events include the following:

  • July 10 – Kolar Chevrolet Buick GMC Classic Car Show – 8 blocks of classic cars and bands (5th Avenue West to 3rd Avenue East) from 5pm to 8pm with car entry beginning at 4pm.
  • July 11 – Happy Hour Thursday at participating bars and restaurants along the route from 4pm-6pm!
  • July 13 – Superior Street Dance:  Dubh Linn Irish Brew Pub hosts live music from Lamont Cranston.

As per the Duluth Police Department, there will also be a series of closures because of the event.

Superior Street from 1st Ave. E to 5th Ave. W. will close to vehicle traffic on Wednesday, July 10 from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

It will also be closed from Thursday, July 11 from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday, July 12, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day. No parking regulations begin in the area at 7 a.m. each morning, and vehicles found in violation are subject to ticketing and towing.

Avenues in the area will remain open to traffic, except during the Classic Car Show.

On Wednesday, July 10, 2nd Ave. W., 3rd Ave. W., 4th Ave. W., 1st Ave E. and 2nd Ave E. will close to traffic at Superior St starting at 3:30 p.m. in preparation for the Classic Car Show. 3rd Ave E, Lake Ave., 1st Ave. W, and 5th Ave. W. will remain open to allow access to Michigan St and 1 St.

All streets will re-open to traffic by 9 p.m.

Vehicles in the Classic Car Show must enter the Car Show area from the intersection of Lake Ave. and Superior St. or at 1st Ave. W. and are encouraged to arrive between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. All Car Show cars must exit the Car Show area by 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, July 13 from 5 p.m. until midnight, the 100 block of West Superior Street between 1st Ave. W. and 2nd Ave. W. will close to traffic for the Dubh Linn’s Irish Pub street dance.

No parking signs will be posted in areas throughout Downtown to help facilitate the events related to Sidewalk Days and to assist buses in getting around the street closures. Vehicles parked in violation will be subject to ticketing and towing. Festival attendees are encouraged to utilize area ramps for parking.
