Skyline Parkway safety changes

Local news, sports, weather presented by the WDIO News Team

Two fatal accidents last fall on Duluth’s Skyline Parkway launched efforts for safety changes.

Public meetings were held for area residents to weigh in, and Thursday night folks gathered at Lincoln Park middle school for an open house. City leaders providing an update on improvements being considered. those includechanging a section of skyline to a westbound one-way, pavement marking to create a space for pedestrians and non-motorized traffic and changes to intersection control at both ends of hank jensen drive.

Joe Jurewicz is a Senior Engineer for the City of Duluth. At Thursday night’s open house he talked about how the hope is the temporary ideas for improved safety will work well and become permanent.

“Long-term, if this is something that the community likes, if it works, to A, slow traffic down, B, trying to make sure that the pedestrians have access safely, if that does work, then long-term, this will be used as an example then we can do something more, make more of a planning effort and look at something more permanent.”

Jurewicz says if the temporary ideas work during the trial period, then the city will make more permanent changes for the long term.
