Some Northland counties added to spring burning restrictions list

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announce additional spring burning restrictions for portions of the Northland. Counties added to the list include Cook, Koochiching, Lake, Lake of the Woods, and Northern St. Louis. The burning restrictions began this morning, April 14 at 6:00 a.m.

DNR officials say the state’s number one cause of wildfires is due to burning vegetative debris and the fire getting out of control. The DNR will not issue permits for the open burning of brush or yard waste in these counties until restrictions are lifted.

For Wisconsin Residents: DNR burn permits are required by the Wisconsin DNR in many parts of the state to conduct legal and safe burning in the outdoors. You can check online each day, or call the hotline 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876).

Restrictions remain in place for Aitkin, Anoka, Benton, Becker, Beltrami, Carlton, Cass, Chisago, Clay, Clearwater, Crow Wing, Douglas, Grant, Hennepin, Hubbard, Isanti, Itasca, Kanabec, Kittson, Mahnomen, Marshall, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Norman, Otter Tail, Pennington, Pine, Polk, Pope, Ramsey, Red Lake, Roseau, Sherburne, southern St. Louis County, Stearns, Stevens, Todd, Traverse, Wadena, Washington, Wilkin, and Wright.

If residents want to dispose of yard waste they can bring their clippings and brush to a collection site or turn it into compost. You can learn more about compositing at mndnr.gov/wildfire/prevention/debris-composting.html

The burning restriction classification will be adjusted as conditions change. For daily updates on current fire risk and open burning restrictions, visit the statewide fire danger and burning restrictions page of the DNR website (mndnr.gov/burnrestrictions).
