Sparking Change aims to diversify the economy in Itasca County

Leaders are preparing for the energy transition when Boswell moves away from coal for good in 2035.

In a decade, Minnesota Power will phase out coal use at their Boswell Energy Center.

This is a big deal for the town of Cohasset and Itasca County.

So leaders are working together to prepare for this transition.

The Itasca Economic Development Corporation convened a task force, to participate in the Sparking Change: Diversifying Our Regional Economy.

The Sparking Change report was released at a two-day summit in Grand Rapids this week.

Next steps include: 1) Outreach to attendees and community with opportunities to connect around the 6 strategic action areas. 2) Creating committees working on specific opportunities, such as green steel or housing engagement.
