Special season wraps up for Hermantown Hawks 8th grade football team

Hermantown Hawks 8th grade football team enjoy a great final middle school season

The Hermantown Hawks 8th grade football team enjoyed a great season for many reasons, including rallying around a team mom who is beating breast cancer.

The final season for middle school football for the 8th grade Hermantown Hawks has wrapped up. And it was a good one, with the team going 5 and 2.

In addition to the good games they played, they had some special moments.

Proud parent Jayson McQueary live streamed the games and provided play by play coverage. Family and friends from far away could watch the action.

“The best thing about the process is the people reaching out who would say, if it wasn’t for the streams, I would never get to see my grandkids play. It’s making sure the whole community and families can join in the excitement. They deserve that,” McQueary said. He used to do play by play of UMD football.

And each game, the guys added splashes of pink to their uniform.

This was done in honor of Jodi McShane, the coach’s wife and one of the player’s moms. She is beating breast cancer.

“I finished treatment at the end of July. And now it’s kind of like putting Humpty Dumpty back together again. I had a surgery a month ago, and I have another one in the spring,” Jodi shared.

Aiden McShane said his teammates thought it was cool to wear pink. “They like supporting my mom.”

Ayden Maki said, “We want to show respect to Jodi and what she’s gone through.”

“It made me happy that I could do something,” shared Bryson Eischen.

Just another reason that they are more than just a group of guys who love the game.

“We’ve been playing together since kindergarten. And growing and building a good team and community that represents Hermantown,” Luke Nelson told us.

Jodi is just so grateful. “I hope nobody else has to go through this. But it’s nice to know if they do, the community will come out and support you.”
