Street preservation meeting shares road work plans for 2025

As a part of the City of Duluth’s Sales Tax Street program, a public meeting for 2025 street preservation planning was held on Thursday October 17th.

55% of Duluth’s 450 miles of road are considered to be in poor condition. To combat this, the City of Duluth’s Sales Tax Street program, funded by the 1/2 Percent Sales Tax program, maintains and repairs the city’s roads.

The projects in 2025 include pavement, utility work, storm repairs and ADA upgrades at intersections.

All projects were organized by priority. High priority projects were deferred from last year, in school neighborhoods, in core investment areas, or in the poorest conditions.

A big concern for 2025 plans, were avoiding resurfacing work on roads that have lead pipes running under them.

“For this year we are focusing on streets that did not have lead water lines so that we won’t have to dig any resurfaced roads when it’s time to replace the pipes,” said James Gittemeier a Senior Transportation Planner at the City of Duluth. “We also take into account our multimodal needs, including safe routes to school, our commercial districts. That’s our core investment areas. We’re always paying attention to city wide distribution. No neighborhood is getting left out. Well, maybe this year they are, but we’re paying attention over the years”
