Structure fire reported in Skelton Township on Saturday night
On Saturday April 8, 2023, at 10:21 PM, the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a
barn on fire at 3015 M T Nelson Road in Skelton Township. The initial report indicated that there
were farm animals, hay, and equipment inside the barn.
Deputies from the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office responded with fire departments from Barnum,
Blackhoof, Mahtowa, Moose Lake, Carlton, and Kettle River. Upon arrival, the barn was found to be
fully involved with fire and was a complete loss. An undetermined number of goats and rabbits
perished as a result of the fire.
The property owners, an adult male and female, sustained burns and smoke inhalation attempting to rescue animals from inside the barn. Both property owners were transported by Essentia EMS to Essentia Hospital Moose Lake, to be treated for their injuries.
Their condition is unknown, but injuries did not appear to be life threatening. The Minnesota Fire Marshall’s Office responded to the scene. The origin of the fire does not appear to be suspicious and is still under investigation by the Fire Marshall’s Office and The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office.
