Students at North Star Academy make maple syrup
Students at the North Star Academy got outside to finally boil all the maple sap they collected to make a northland staple, maple syrup, on Tuesday April 8th.
This comes after lots of hard work learning the history of maple syrup production, tapping trees and collecting lots of maple sap.
“The best thing is when the kids realize the forty to one ratio.” said Ahren Crotty an outdoor education teacher. “They have to collect forty gallons of sap from the trees and haul it with their manual labor down the hill to get it here, and that’ll produce one gallon of maple syrup for them.
It’s a lot of hard work, but students were excited to see it all pay off
“I’m pretty excited about it,” said 7th grader Felix Jimenez. “I love maple syrup myself. It’s just really delicious, and we get to have pancakes at the end. So, I’m really happy about it.”
North Star Academy has lots of outdoor programs for various age groups, like maple syruping, canoeing, and archery.
