The Superior YMCA’s Tall Pines summer camp is raising funds for expanding their program. The camp is looking to provide winter activities and overnight camping. Currently they offer day to day summer camp experience.
Tall Pines summer camp, held an open house where families could visit the camp area. A silent auction also helped raise funds for camp equipment, and other investments for the camp.
Nathaniel Ballard, the camp director of Tall Pines summer camp, said the program begins the second week of June. But it continues until the last week of August. “So each year is a little bit different. But out here at camp right now, we just have it as a day camp,” Ballard said.
Families could also go on tours of Tall Pines, make arts and crafts, and a play capture the flag. “Next year we’re going to do day camp and overnight camp. But during the day you’ll see kids out here. We’ve got 120 out here every day they bus in from from Superior out here. And we’ve got all sorts of activities like swimming and kayaking. And they are out here playing Gaga balls, their favorite.”
Ballard also said Tall Pines summer camp is over one hundred years old, and that there will be a 5k run happening in September. “We want our kids to be outside the the outdoors, exploring the area here off of their electronics. Build relationships and friendships together.”
Hannah Bourgalt, the Marketing and Event Coordinator with the Superior YMCA, said Tall Pines summer camp helps children build their own personal community in addition to just like building the community as a whole.
“When we have like happy, healthy kids, they create a better future for our community. And so we’re excited to have kids out here and have them experience all the nature things,” Bourgalt said.

“There’s always a bunch of projects going on around camp. We have a bunch of like really wonderful volunteers that have done a lot of work helping with the pavilion and helping getting camp set up where it is now. We got a big grant which really helped us be able to build camp into what it is today.”
