The intersection at Third St. & Lake Ave. is closed from July 31st through mid-October. For the time being you cannot go up or down the full lake avenue. This has caused frustration for many drivers following all the detours to reach Mesaba Avenue.
Alex Popp, the Project Engineer with the City of Duluth, said the construction crews will also doing a little bit of storm sewer work underneath these intersections.
“Lake Avenue is part of our Third Street reconditioning. Later this week, we’re going to be also going into Sixth Avenue East, doing the same work there,” Popp said. “We’re removing the signals, removing the pavement and replacing everything with new concrete or section traffic signals.”
Some residents who live on Third Street expressed concerns about city buses not being able to pick them up. However Popp said the DTA are switching their stops around to pick up residents needing public transportation.
“They’re sending all their busses up on the Fourth Street between Sixth Avenue East and Lake Avenue. They are using temporary and existing bus stops for those services,” Popp said.
Popp also said that the construction at the two intersections on Lake Avenue and Sixth Avenue East will help with traffic for next year’s road construction.
“The work this year is going to support us to be able to hopefully do mostly lane closures for next year. We’re doing that more extensive work on the rest of Third Street between Fourth Avenue,” Popp said.
