Traffic changes coming due to Third Street Reconditioning
Duluth residents need to be aware of street closures due to the Third Street Reconditiong Project, which begins on Monday, July 31. According to the City of Duluth the first phase of the project will include concrete pavement intersections and new signals at Lake Avenue and Sixth Avenue East.
The first phase of the project will occur this year and will include the following closures:
- Intersection at Third Street and Lake Avenue
- Intersection at Third Street and Sixth Avenue East
- Third Street from First Avenue East to Lake Avenue.
According to the City, the detour route for Lake Avenue will be posted for drivers to use Superior Street, First Avenue West, and Fourth Street.
The existing detours for the First Avenue East Reconstruction Project that follow the same route for Second Street and Third Street traffic will remain in place.
The detour route for the Michigan Street Utility Replacement Project will continue to use Superior Street.
Officials say the Second Street will be temporarily changed to a two-way road from First Avenue West to First Avenue East.
A detour route for Sixth Avenue E will have drivers using Seventh Avenue East, East Fourth Street, and Fifth Avenue East.
East Third Street will be temporarily changed to a two-way road within the closed area to provide access to those properties.
According to a release from the City, the second phase of the project will include concrete pavement repairs, bituminous mill and overlay, ADA intersection improvements, and the removal of the signals at Fourth Avenue West, First Avenue East, Third Avenue East, and Fifth Avenue East.
Officials say the first phase of the project is expected to be completed in October 2023. Work for the second phase is planned to resume in the spring of 2024.
Due to the work occurring this year the remaining work for this project is expected to only require lane closures on Third Street.
