Trying to keep cool this weekend? Don’t sweat it, here’s some tips

Are you trying to keep cool this weekend, but still feeling too hot? Don't sweat it, here's some tips from people in Canal Park on how you can beat the heat.

We’re in for one of the hottest weekends of this month. But how people walking around Canal Park trying to keep cool this weekend? When you look for something cold to eat or drink what do you look for? Some people reach for ice cold water, some enjoy cool lemonade, and of course, there’s ice cream.

Brayden Peterson and some other members of his baseball team were visiting Duluth from Viroqua Wisconsin. He says he enjoys a cold Dr. Pepper on hot day after being in the outfield. “It’s hot, I don’t know if I like it, but I get used to it, it’s nice. We’re going swimming this weekend,” Peterson said, “It’s supposed to get hot, so we’re going swimming. Next we’re going to get some ice cream.”

Billy Auvin will be going to UMD in the fall but this weekend, he and his brother Dillon were trying to beat the heat with some ice cream. “Trying to stay in the shade as much as possible. Just like swimming in Lake Superior.” Billy said. “Staying in that AC, eating some ice cream. So, what can I say? Get a shake from Love Creamery,” Dillion added.

But even with the heat there were even a couple kids looking to raise some funds for their summer little leagues. James Van Loon and Phillip Mogen were out selling lemonade on Park Point for the Encompass Expos baseball team. They said found the best place to provide refreshing lemonade right by the bus stop.

“We’re trying to raise money for our little league, like the tournament fees,” Mogen said. “Sometimes you’re trying to raise it for hockey at points,” Van Loon said. “We’re basically in the perfect spot for it. We’ve got loads of cars coming in, right next to the beach.”

While freeze pops, ice cream and lemonade are nice treats, what about keeping our bodies cool?  Kelly Kleinschmidt, a nurse practitioner who’s seen people push themselves past their limits being out in the heat. She says when you feel lightheaded or dizzy take a break and cool off.

“Water is actually the best way to cool yourself down. Like if we have a medical emergency, one of the best things you can do is use cold water to cool down the body fast. So I always like to pick on the lake because it’s our perfect cooling process,” Kleinschmidt said. “So safely swimming in Lake Superior is a great way to have fun outside, but also stay cool and not get too hot.”

Quinn, Ryan and Noble also got a head start this weekend by swimming in Lake Superior. “I’m not hot at all. Because we splashed in the water where it was nice and cool,” Quinn said. “Yeah, we fell in the water,” Ryan said.

Paul Bratti is visiting Duluth from Bayfield and he says the winds off of Lake Superior can help with the warm weekend ahead us.

“You know, we live in an area where it doesn’t get that hot. I mean, it may be 85, but what you want to do is walk a trail. It’s very comfortable, right next to the lake,” Bratti said. “Listen, most of the country dealing with 100, 110, 115. 85 degrees? Man, we’ll take it in the Northland. We’ll take it up here.”
