Two Harbors man about to hit 2,000 consecutive bike rides
In March 2019, Adam Malmanger started a 30-day biking challenge. He hasn’t stopped.
It’s been five and a half years and more than 1,995 days, and he still hops on one of his six bikes at least once a day, every day.
“Sickness and in health,” he said.
Thursday will mark his 2,000th consecutive bike ride.
“It’s kind of weird how it happens,” Malmanger said, “but really it’s one day at a time and you’re only living today, so really it’s just Day 1 every day.”
But he hasn’t made any special plans for the 2,000th ride.
“Just an average Adam day,” he said.
In 2023, he decided to challenge himself to ride 7,000 miles in one year. He hit that goal in November, so he upped it in 2024.
“I was going to go big or go home I guess,” Malmanger said. “And this year, I had five years of biking every day, I turned 40 in July so that was kind of a big deal, and then (Thursday) will be day 2,000. So it’s like, this is the year we’ve got to pump it up. So we’re doing 10,000 miles this year.”
That requires riding an average of 27 miles per day. Again, he expects to reach his 10,000-mile goal by Thanksgiving. Anything he rides in December will be “bonus miles.”
“I kind of made a joke that it’s like, am I either chasing something down or am I running from something?” he said. “But really I think it all just brings it in closer to finding me and who I am.”
