U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw makes an unusual stop to remove an ice shanty
The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw made an unexpected stop in the shipping channel in Superior on Thursday last week.
They stopped to remove an ice shelter that had migrated into the channel.
Commander Jeannette Greene shared, “This is a dangerous place for anyone to be. We pulled up slowly, because we didn’t know if anyone was in there, so we didn’t want to break the ice.”
Their trained ice rescue team went out and retrieved it. Commander Greene had been worried about what they might find. “But it was empty, with just a propane heater and bait bucket,” she shared. “We are trained for search and rescue, but we don’t often get called out for it. So this was cool for us.”
This was all captured thanks to Vibe with Mike, who was filming the vessel for the YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/@vibewithmike
“This is the perfect time to mention the respect we have for the Coast Guard members and what they do,” he shared in the video.
The Coast Guard would like to return the equipment to the rightful owner. Please contact them if it is yours: (231) 597-2030
Greene does not think anyone would have purposely set up the shanty in the shipping channel. And if that does happen, believes a conversation would happen before any potential citations.
