Duluth Ukulele Community Strum

The Duluth Ukulele Community Strum meets twice a month

If you are looking for others to play some ukelele with, look no further than the Duluth Ukulele Community Strum. Twice a month, members from the community come together at the Ecumen Lakeshore to jam out on their ukeleles.

The event is free and welcomes anyone above the age of 18 to join in. The players all gather in a circle and take turns picking songs from their ukulele books. The Duluth Ukulele Community Strum (DUCS) welcomes anyone to join no matter skill level or instrument.

Christina Cotruvo hosts the jam sessions in Duluth as her background as a therapeutic musician brought her to make music a supporting quality of others’ lives. “Oh, it’s fun. We are a very no-stress group,” she said. “If you don’t know it, we call it an air strum. If you don’t sing, it doesn’t matter. It’s just like an hour and a half of sharing music.”

This is not the only Ukulele group in the Northland though. Two other groups often get together to have small jam sessions as well. There is one at First Luteran called FLUCS and the other, the first one in northern Minnesota, is in Two Harbors known as THUC. All three of these groups have been strumming for many years.

The DUCS were assembled one summer when Christina noticed that the other two took a summer off. She found a place and put it out there. Since then, they have been going on for seven years. The group getting together two times a month, for every month sans December.

Below are the dates scheduled so far for the upcoming months and to contact and join the jam sessions check out the DUCS’ website or email duluthukulelecommunitystrum@gmail.com
