The University of Wisconsin Superior is now offering a unique online early childhood special education license program. This special concentration will help provide students a more well-rounded learning experience with teaching.
Anne Robertson, an Assistant Teaching Professor in Early Childhood Education at UWS, explained why online early childhood special education licensure so important. “Children can learn best when we’re all working together. Preparing our students to effectively be able to communicate with families and how to provide families resources and how to best communicate with different types of families as well as the community as a whole.” Robertson said.
Dr. Amanda Zbacnik, a UWS Associate Professor of Special Education, talked more about the possibilities after finishing the online early childhood special education licensure. “What they have is the option to walk away with four different licenses. So one in early childhood, in special education and early childhood special education and in elementary education.” Dr. Zbacnik said.
However, there are plenty of opportunities to learn in-person throughout the online early childhood special education licensure. “They participate in field experiences, they get to observe, they get to assist teachers in the classroom. They get to take over and teach lessons on their own. So we’re really trying to provide experiences that will be all encompassing and well-rounded.” Robertson said. “We try to work with our students to also help them really learn that part of their role is also empowering parents so that they can support their children. And that’s another, important piece of that family connection.
Of course teaching young children, or children with special needs, also means having a connection with parents too. “Be open and honest about sharing their students strengths and and or challenges. It truly does take a team.” Dr. Zbacnik said.
