High-voltage virtuosity meets comic chemistry at Pride Festival

Amongst Duluth-Superior Pride Festival, two performers are bringing high-voltage virtuosity to comic chemistry. David Saffert and Jillian Snow are returning to the northland with their show, Liberace & Liza: A Tribute.

This show features their mashup of the two popular icons, Liberace and Liza. This improv musical comedy show came from their passion as fans of these performers. They expressed their perspective as performers and how to see their show this weekend.

So, when David and Jilliam came together, they started what they referred to as their ‘friend project.’ Liberace and Liza never performed together. There are photos of them together, but never together for a show. They saw the idea and said “Well, why not?” Jillian further shared how it felt to portray well known icons.

What it’s like to perform as such Icons

“I think the more authentic we play these legends, the better. I mean, it comes off funny accidentally just because we’re you know, it’s they weren’t friends in real life. That in itself is fun and funny.”

David performs the role of Liberace, who passed away 35 years ago. So, their perspective on performing as someone who has passed away turned rather unique.

“And so, for me, when people come up and say, I saw Liberace, to me, it’s a big deal because he, he, I think he stopped performing in 1986. So, it’s been a very long time. And so, if people come up to me and say, I saw Liberace in Reno, I saw him in, you know, the circle star theater, wherever.”

The two icons, Liberace & Liza, never performed together despite being trendsetters for people like Lady Gaga and Elton John. Thus, David and Jillian are excited to bring their unique performance to Duluth for the Pride Festival.

“This is very special for Jillian and I to be playing a Pride event, as two queer people playing, one and a half queer people. It’s a big deal for us. And to the community, this show works well for anybody, for all ages.”

Liberace and Liza: A Tribute will be at the Depot Theatre on Friday and Saturday (August 30th/31st, 2024) at 7pm. For tickets call (218) 213-2780 or contact Brian@RubberChickenTheater.com
