An Adaptive Approach

Winter recreation is a big thing here in the Northland and programs like Northland Adaptive Recreation go the extra mile to make sure people of all abilities have the chance to enjoy the colder months on the slopes.

NAR creates programs each season with the mission to offer all individuals a chance to feel whole, active and included. This winter they are running Ski and Snowboard lessons at both Spirit Mountain and Giants Ridge.

The program coordinators and volunteers focus heavily on building a sense of community with the participants. Program Coordinator Tyler Vandel shares why programs like this one mean so much to so many of his skiers and snowboarders. “We all know what it’s like being stuck inside cold weather. And when you have other limiting factors, how that can get you down. So it’s getting us an opportunity to be outside, be involved, hang out with friends, family, and just live”

Besides the social aspect of the program, another key focus is building the confidence to ride and ski out on the snow independently. Mitchell Tanquist started as a participant with NAR, but has now become an avid monoskier and instructor.

With a sense of independence and freedom on the slopes, it has really allowed him to branch out beyond the Northland hills. “At first I would only ski with this program, but in the last two years I bought my own ski. I’ve been able to go to Colorado multiple times. I’ve been able to just ski on my own with my parents or friends or just get out.”

Northland Adaptive Recreation runs different programs every season and continues to seek support from volunteers and donors looking to help make a difference in our community. If you are interest in learning on ways to help check out their website.
