Strengthening culture and community at UMD

Today on Good Morning Northland, Jazzmine Long, the Co-President of the Indigenous Student Organization at the University of Minnesota Duluth, joined the show to talk about the return of the Ziigwan Powwow.

This Saturday, the Indigenous Student Organization hosts the third annual Ziigwan Powwow at UMD, bringing vibrant culture, energy, and tradition to campus.

Jazzmine Long, Co-President of the Indigenous Student Organization, explained, “A powwow is a celebration with singing, dancing, and gathering with family and friends. For UMD, it’s about togetherness and unity.”

After several years without the event, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. “Students love to engage and participate, and the community is excited to join in,” Long said.

The event will feature drum groups from across North America, dancers in various categories, and a delicious feast catered by Streetcar Pub and Catering. “It’s a great opportunity to enjoy amazing food while celebrating together,” Long added.

The Ziigwan Pow Wow is free and open to everyone. “It’s a true community event,” Long said.

Join the celebration this Saturday, March 29th, at 11 a.m. at the Ward-Wells Fieldhouse. Don’t miss this chance to experience unity, tradition, and culture!
