Superior School administration gives insight into November’s referendum question

Superior School District calls for budget referendum support

Education is a must for most community members. However, Superior schools are feeling limited in their ability to operate with current budgetary restrictions. On GMN, Superior School District Administrators came in to highlight the importance of their new budget referendum coming to the ballot this November.

The Superior School District Administrator along with the Director of Business Services joined GMN’s Nyah Adams to talk about the November operational referendum question that could fund the schools for the next five years.

The question reads in part: Shall the School District of Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin be authorized to exceed the revenue limit specified in Section 121.91, Wisconsin Statutes, by $2,500,000 per year for the 2024-2025 school year and the 2025-2026 school year, by $3,500,000 for the 2026-2027 school year, by $4,500,000 for the 2027-2028 school year and by $5,500,000 for the 2028-2029 school year, for non-recurring purposes consisting of operational and maintenance expenses, including for educational programming, facility maintenance and security updates?

A sample of the ballot question can be found here.

District Administrator, Dr. Amy Starzecki says that this is not an uncommon issue in the state of Wisconsin. 85% of schools in the state have already asked for an operation referendum, Superior is of the 15% that have not.

The Director of Business Services, David See, adds that this going to keep the lights and utilities on. See also says that this is different from the previous referendum that built a new building saying those funds are nontransferable.
