A double anniversary for Lake Superior Brewing
Lake Superior Brewing is celebrating a double anniversary next week.
It’s both the 30th anniversary of the historic brewery and the 2nd anniversary of the Maxim family taking it over and opening a restaurant with it in the Lakeside neighborhood.
“We wanted to see the brand not go away and both had a passion for hospitality, food, beverage, and beer. And that was kind of part of our reason of reviving and trying to preserve the legacy, I guess, of one of Minnesota’s oldest breweries but Duluth’s oldest craft brewery,” Sarah Maxim said.
From Tuesday to Saturday, they’ll have themed nights, live music, and beer releases. One of those is the very first beer ever brewed at Lake Superior: the Special Ale.
Seth Maxim says it has more hops than most Midwest-style beers would have in 1994.
“I know East Coast and West Coast, especially, those IPAs were really coming through. But this is kind of a between: not like a huge IPA like people have these days, but it’s still hop-forward and kind of pleasant,” he said.
Lake Superior Brewing will also put the Old Man Winter Warmer on tap, an 11% barley wine style.
