August stargazing with AstroBob
Bob King, aka AstroBob, says we should keep our eyes on the sky in the week ahead.
From Sunday, August 11 to Monday, August 12, you’ll be able to see the Perseid Meteor Shower.
“That’s one of the best showers of the year,” explains AstroBob. “The earth happens to pass a path of debris left by a comet by Swift Tuttle. We’re literally slamming into the material sloughed off by the comet. And that strikes the atmosphere at, yes, a 133,000 miles per an hour.”
AstroBob says the best way to enjoy this shower is to sit back, stare at the sky, and do nothing. The farther you get out of town to watch the shower the better.
Additionally, on August 14 at the start of morning twilight, Mars and Jupiter will be very close.
“There’s something about seeing to bright celestial objects together that are beautiful,” AstroBob says the Mars-Jupiter Conjunction is a wow-event.
And fingers-crossed for more opportunities to see the Northern Lights because there’s been some sunspots lately.
“These sunspots have the potential to cause big solar storms. So, there’s a possibility that some of that stuff might happen and then arrive by the weekend.”
