Bentleyville’s biggest fans will visit more than a dozen times
Tens of thousands of people walk through the Bentleyville Tour of Lights, so it might be hard to spot the regulars. But a Superior mother-son duo go over and over and over again.
Ethan Meyer doesn’t remember the first time he went, but he’s had many memorable moments since.
“We’ve always come to Bentleyville. So since he was a baby, we’ve come here at least once or twice a year,” Crystal Meyer said.
In 2023, 10-year-old Ethan and Crystal went 13 times.
“Sometimes it’s 20 minutes, sometimes it’s 2 hours. We just go with the flow,” Crystal said.
The goal for 2024 is at least 14 visits. That’s about 40 percent of the nights Bentleyville is open.
“This addiction actually started for kind of a really sad reason,” Crystal said. “We lost my dad unexpectedly in 2019 and then my nephew a couple of years later. And we were struggling with Christmas.”
Bentleyville provided a light – or 5 million of them.
“This is just where we felt happy. And so Ethan and I specifically – I have a daughter, and we’ve got daddy. But what are they?” Crystal asked her son.
“The Grinch,” Ethan said.
“They’re the Grinches,” she agreed.
Ethan knows every inch of the display, pointing out a tree that was newly added on his 9th visit of 2024.
“They changed the display in the TVs and they move and get different lights every year,” he said.
The Meyers change it up on each visit too.
“We change it up based on the weather. When it’s like this, we usually do two circles. And we’ll get hot cocoa and the popcorn and every treat along the way,” Crystal said. “When it’s cold, we get hot chocolate and we run.”
Ethan summed up how he feels at Bentleyville in one word: “Happy.”
“I’m going to do it as long as he wants to hang out with me,” Crystal said.
The Meyers planned to notch their 12th visit on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Bentleyville is open through Dec. 28.
