Buddy Holly tribute concert to raise funds for Duluth Armory

Buddy Holly Tribute Concert planned for the Armory

Perserving the historic Duluth Armory, with big news for the restoration project.

The Duluth Armory has hosted some of America’s most famous musicians, including Buddy Holly. He brought the Winter Dance Party tour to Duluth on January 31, 1959. Holly would die just three days later in a plane crash, in what we become known as the “Day the Music Died.”

In the audience of the show, a young Bob Dylan, who would later credit the concert as instrumental in his career.

The Armory Arts and Music Center is working to preserve the building and its history, while imaging its reuse with and emphasis on the arts and education.

They’ve issued a building permit for the city, and contractors will soon be onsite.

They’re fundraising for this project with a Buddy Holly tribute concert on Sunday, January 26, at Clyde Iron Works. Todd Eckhart and his band will play the music of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Big Bopper, and Dion and the Belmonts. The opening act is the Mackie Brothers, and local comedian Danielle Thralow will be the celebrity emcee.

Tickets are available online.
