Don’t miss these North Shore waterfalls
With lots of recent rain, North Shore waterfalls are raging.
Melissa Dressly writes the North Shore Explorer guide, and she says there are four that locals and visitors alike can’t miss this summer.
Gooseberry Falls
Everybody is familiar with Gooseberry Falls, but Dressly says it’s still a must-see, especially with visitors.
“The waterfalls are never the same. Every time you go, it’s always something different.”
She also appreciates the wheelchair-accessible paved trails that offer views of the falls.
Caribou River Falls
The Cascade River Falls are right on the Lake-Cook County line.
“This one’s nice and easy to get to. It’s just .7 miles one way,” Dressly said.
There are stairs going down to the falls.
Cascade River Falls
“This one is a really good example of it’s not just one waterfall. It’s like a series of waterfalls and cascades,” she said.
She suggests parking at the highway wayside and either taking a short or long loop.
High Falls at Grand Portage State Park
Dressly says Grand Portage State Park is worth the drive. The High Falls are on the Pigeon River on the border with Canada. It is the tallest waterfall in Minnesota.
There is a paved trail that is wheelchair-accessible.
She also highly recommends a stop for breakfast or lunch at the Waves Cafe in Tofte.
