Duluthian taking on a principle role in the Harry Potter play on Broadway
Sarah Killough is taking on a principle role in ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ on Broadway. She plays Ginny Potter, Harry Potter’s wife.
Sarah grew up in Duluth, doing theatre at Ordean Middle School, Duluth East High School, and the Duluth Playhouse where she was cast in Les Misérables around 2014.
She has performed on Broadway before, but never in a show quite like this. She’s been keeping up with the adventures of Harry Potter and his friends ever since she read the first book. “I mean, my mom gave me the first three books for Christmas, I don’t know, like 2000, 1999, something like that. Then after that, we would go to all the book releases at Barnes and Noble at the mall and then we would go to the movie releases, like I have been a fan for so long.”
And Sarah plays a big role in The Cursed Child, “I play Ginny Potter, formerly known as Ginny Weasley, Harry Potter’s wife.” Something she agrees doesn’t feel real.
Sarah made her Ginny debut on November 12th of this year and says during the tech rehearsal the actors had to be super precise with their movements to make sure the magic looked right on stage.
Magic being another aspect of this show that Sarah loves to do as Ginny. “Like, I cast spells and then things happen. I’ve always wanted to do that, who hasn’t?”
Sarah gives a big thank you to all of her teachers, both theatre and non-theatre alike and has words of advice for any other Duluthians who are interested in becoming an actor.
Killough says, “Be curious. You can learn something from everyone. You may not agree with them, but then you’ve learned that. You learned that you don’t agree with them. So try not to say that it’s not worth it. You can learn from everyone and anything. Yeah, there’s a lot to learn.”
