Earth Month: No price tags at this UWS store
It’s a fact that most college students don’t have much money. But there’s a store on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Superior where they don’t need it.
The Sustainability Club runs it. Members come from all over the world: President Mikaela Matias is from the Philippines and Vice President Saya Kondo is from Japan.
“My current future goal is to involve in sustainable marketing or sustainable businesses. And I’m really interested in that field, so when I came here I found there is Sustainability Club,” Kondo said. “I went to first meeting and it was just like, let’s go.”
They know that other students might not be prepared for the northern Wisconsin winter, so they stock jackets, hats, scarves, and mittens. There’s plenty of others clothes too.
“The free store is kind of like self-service. You know like how thrift store works,” Matias said. “It’s basically like that without paying for it. So people can donate clothes, household materials, even school materials. They can just drop it off here.”
Students just sign in and take what they want.
The Club is also making a difference in dining with reusable O2GO lunchboxes in the Yellowjacket Union.
“If you order with that box, they will provide your food with that box, and after you finish your food, you don’t have to wash that box,” Kondo said. “There’s a returning box, a big black returning box in YU. So just drop your lunchbox there and then food service company on our campus, they will wash it and all of us can reuse the lunchbox.”
They both hope that the work they’re doing with the club also translates to a career.
“It’s part of my advocacy, like sustainability, environmental rights and etcetera,” Matias said. “So I feel like this club was the perfect match.”
