Fool around with your family tree thanks to Douglas County Genealogy
Digging into family history has become a popular pastime.
The Douglas County Genealogy Club is all about learning and helping people build on their backgrounds. They meet at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, typically at the Douglas County Historical Society.
On April 5, they’ll host an event called Foolin’ Around With Your Family Tree.
“We came up with that title a long time ago, and we try to have it around April Fools’ Day,” Judy Aunet said. “So it’s a fun event.”
Marie Mattson, a certified genealogist with the Board for Certification of Genealogists, is one of two speakers this year.
“What I’m mainly doing is something to do with the Bureau of Land Management general land records, where a lot of people I don’t think even realize we have this great resource,” she said.
She’s used those records to trace her second great-grandfather back to the county in which he was born in Pennsylvania.
The other speaker, Joanne Sher, will discuss what people were doing here on U.S. soil when thousands of men were away fighting World War I.
Foolin’ Around With Your Family Tree starts at 5:30 p.m. on April 5. There are both in-person and virtual options. It is free.
