Tomorrow may be Friday, but folks in Ironwood, Mich., will be calling it Plaidurday.
Every year, the iconic hat maker Stormy Kromer hosts a celebration of all things plaid. They employ 100 people in the Ironwood area, and they’re proud to call it home.
This year, Plaidurday will include live music, vendors, artisans, a farmers market, deals on gear, and even a plaid scavenger hunt.
“Different local businesses had the opportunity to design their own plaid, which we then printed on big banners,” Stormy Kromer CEO Gina Thorsen said. “So there’s about 13 businesses doing it, and they’ve got their unique plaid in their store window, and then there’s a little kind of match the plaid to the business.”
Thorsen said her favorite part of the 12-years-running event is when hundreds of people gather in the street to snap a group shot.
“Always the highlight is the big photo,” she said. “We use a drone to take it, and just to see how many folks we can get and how crazy some of them dress. I mean, some people are literally head-to-toe in plaid from their socks and their shoes — everything.”
Plaidurday goes from 4-7:30 p.m. Friday in downtown Ironwood. Celebrations will happen simultaneously in Marquette and Detroit too.
