On UMD’s campus there’s another accessible rink that offers open skates in the Twin Ports.
In the Sports and Health Center, the UMD Recreational Outdoor Program hosts open skates on the recently renamed Richard Haney multipurpose rink. The space is used by the men’s and women’s club hockey teams and the figure skating club, but it is also open to both UMD students and the public.
Tom White, Associate Director of Recreation & Wellness, says the rink offers a lot of opportunities for skaters.
“Specifically we have open skate 5 days a week and then we have one on Saturday as well. So this is a chance for people to come, if you want to try ice skating for the first time. It’s not always busy you can go at your own pace, if you want to get out get some exercise it’s a great opportunity too”, says White. “And you are not limited by conditions outside or the cold weather which are the limits outside.”
You can check it out for yourself Monday to Friday from11:30am to 1:30pm.
“If you’re just interested in coming to the open skate, there’s an open skate fee.” If you’re looking to skate more than once, you can also purchase a season pass. Otherwise open skate is included in a rec center pass. Another benefit of this location is that RSOP also offers ice skate rentals.
