Learning about Pride and drag with ThatQueerIsa, a Virginia Superstar
ThatQueerIsa, or Isa for short, is a drag queen who calls the Northland home.
Isa’s fairly new to drag but she’s loud and proud and a big advocate for queer people in the region. Plus wherever she is, She’s always representing her home town of Virginia.
“I’ve gotten a lot of love and support, especially from the Iron Range. Just for me traveling around Minnesota and performing at these different venues, repping- you know being a black, trans, drag artist. And people support it and they love it,” says Isa.
Growing up ThatQueerIsa says she was bold teenager. She says, “I really didn’t give people in my hometown or my high school to really accept me or not. I didn’t give them the opportunity. You gotta accept me. I’m here.”
“There’s a lot of different thoughts out there about queer people in small towns and stuff like that. I always knew to keep it cute, be nice.” She says. Growing up Isa played volleyball and was in palms in high school which helped her become what she calls a stunt queen.
ThatQueerIsa is now a drag superstar coming up to 2 years of doing drag. It’s a career she wants to pursue for the future.
And she’s sharing a message to other queer people during this year’s Pride Month. “Be your true authentic self. Don’t let anybody tell you anything different… It’s a very powerful thing, especially during Pride Month. This is a month about love, a month about being who you are, and that’s what I’m about, okay?”
