Learning to balance your budget
In honor of Financial Literacy Month, Amanda Bruggman of Affinity Plus is putting a spotlight on the importance of smart money habits by sharing the results of a new survey and some budgeting tips.
Affinity Plus’ survey found that 40% of Minnesotans would rather visit the dentist than sit down with a financial advisor, signaling that many people feel uncomfortable talking about their finances.
“The survey also found some good news. The majority of respondents follow a budget and generally know how to start a budget,” Amanda told The Lift. “True financial wellness begins with open conversations, which is why I’m excited to be here today to share some budgeting tips anyone can follow to feel more confident in their finances.”
Amanda recommends finding a financial coach that you can trust to set specific goals based on your income and budget. Affinity Plus is proud to offer Certified Financial Coaches- where you can get free personalized advice.
There is a lot advice circulating on the internet- but you should remember that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to money.
“Not every trend is going to fit your financial needs, so when looking at trends on social media, proceed with caution,” Amanda says. “One trend I think anyone can benefit from is loud budgeting, which is the idea that you can stick to your budget by telling people you are declining an invitation to a social event – like grabbing dinner with a friend – for a financial reason. This trend is all about being open about finances to achieve financial freedom.”
If you’re looking for a place to start write out your budget, review bank statements to see where your money is going, and making sure you have a $1,000 emergency fund.
