Experiment with a homemade lava lamp

The Lift learns how to make homemade lava lamps.

Science Siblings Paige and Adam Jacobson are giving us a new science experiment to do over winter break, make a homemade lava lamp.

You’ll need the following ingredients

  • A glass to see the reaction
  • Baking soda
  • oil
  • vinegar
  • food coloring and glitter

First you’ll take your baking soda and pour it in the bottom of your glass. Just enough so you have a thin layer that covers the entire bottom.

Then you’ll slowly pour your oil in the glass, pouring against the wall so it doesn’t mix with the baking soda.

Next add food coloring and glitter to your vinegar to make you lava lamp colorful

Then you’re ready for the reaction. Pour the colored vinegar in the middle of your glass and watch as the blobs start to activate!

BONUS: We used small panel lights and put our glasses on top of them to get a glow from below! Play with light and see what your lava lamps look like in the dark.
