Northern Lights Aerial Studio celebrates 1 year of unique dance lessons

Northern Light Aerials celebrates one year in business

Reporter Kenny Johnson tries out aerial dance.

Northern Lights Aerial Dance Studio is the only dance studio in Duluth that teaches the aerial arts and is about to celebrate their one year anniversary. The studio is owned by four friends who all came together by their shared interests in dance.

Located in the building across from Pizza Luce, the studio offers six unique dances that involve silks, pole, or lyra. A lyra is steel hoop up that hangs in the air that dancers move through and manipulate.

According to the studio, it has not been hard to get people involved. Co-owner Anna Beam-Mitchell says, “It can be a little scary to get off the ground and to spin around, but our instructors at the studio are really awesome at breaking things down and making it accessible for people. So we like to say aerial is for everybody.”

August 17th Northern Lights Studio is hosting a free open house starting at 5:00pm where you can check out all the dances. You find more information here.

Anna says they are excited to potentially get more people involved in the artform after they broke an attendance record this year. “The biggest milestone that I think we’ve had recently, that I was really proud of, happened this month and that was the first time we got over 100 attendances,” says Anna.
