Resource Renew is WLSSD’s new brand

In light of Earth Month, Carrie Clement from the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) outlines the district's new initiatives and a significant rebranding to Resource Renew.

The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District, known as WLSSD, is rebranding as Resource Renew.

Leaders say they are “champions of responsible reuse of water, waste materials, and renewable energy.”

“We are an essential economic catalyst for the region and a source of sustainable advantages for our residents, businesses, and communities,” an announcement said.

WLSSD treats all of the wastewater in the region, makes the rules for solid waste, and runs facilities to protect the water quality.

Incoming Executive Director Carrie Clement said the team is excited about a Combined Heat and Power project that’s been a long time in the works.

“It is a major milestone on a journey towards energy independence,” she said. “What it is is really allowing us to use a byproduct from the wastewater treatment process, biogas, and produce electricity.”

They’ll also recover the exhaust heat from engine generators to heat the process and facilities.

The new brand, plus a celebration of the CHP project and longtime executive director Marianne Bohren’s retirement, is coming up Wednesday, April 16. At 2 p.m.. the public is invited to the WLSSD facility at 2626 Courtland Street.
