Superior YMCA celebrates Native American Heritage Month

Every Monday in November, the Superior YMCA is celebrating Native American Heritage Month with different classes. These are free and open to the public, meaning you don’t need a membership to get in on these educational opportunities.
- November 7th – Ojibwe 101 (6:00PM – 7:30PM) This session is designed to be an introduction to Ojibwe culture that promotes awareness and understanding of the Ojibwe people of this area as well as dispels some of the common misconceptions and stereotypes about Native peoples. This session includes: The Ojibwe migration story, information on the 4 sacred medicines, significance and history of traditional lacrosse, information about dreamcatchers, traditional uses for birch bark, the significance of eagle feathers and much more
- November 14th – Make Your Own Dreamcatcher (Bawaajige-nawaagan) (6:00PM – 7:30PM) In this session you will be learning to make an Ojibwe style dreamcatcher and learn the teachings and story behind it.
- November 21st – Learn to Play Lacrosse (6:00PM – 7:30PM) In this session you will learn the history and traditions of Ojibwe lacrosse while also participating and learning gameplay!
- November 28th – Learn to Bead (6:00PM – 8:00PM) In this session you will learn about Ojibwe beadwork traditions while also learning how to make a daisy chain.
