Throwback Thursday: Women dominate the Beargrease in 1989

Back in 1989, women dominated the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.

Champion mushers DeeDee Jonrowe of Alaska and Jamie Nelson of Minnesota were fierce competitors but good sports.

“She’s so nice, and she’s quite a competitor. She really impresses me,” Jonrowe said of Nelson.

Jonrowe ended up winning the 1989 race.

The 39th running of the Beargrease begins at 10 a.m. this Sunday, Jan. 29.
