Trading Spaces star presenting on design at Home Show

Lori Smith from 'Trading Spaces' tells us what we can expect from her presentation at the Duluth Home Show.

Laurie Smith, an interior designer who starred on “Trading Spaces,” will present about home renovations and the impact of design at the Arrowhead Home & Builders Show.

Smith gained an appreciation for what makes a house a home as a child because her family moved a lot. She wound up studying journalism and art history but continued to pursue interior design.

A friend who was an interior designer in Atlanta was approached about “Trading Spaces” but turned it down.

“She gave them my name, and I went and auditioned in 1999 kind of bright-eyed and a little clueless, but I think that was the beauty of it,” Smith said. “And next thing I knew, three weeks later, I was shooting the very first episode of ‘Trading Spaces’ in Knoxville, Tennessee.”

The show is no longer on the air, but Smith is still helping people make their spaces home.

“Back in 2006 … I actually wrote a book called ‘Discovering Home.’ And one of the just main themes throughout my almost 30 years of practicing is that a home is a reflection of the soul of the inhabitants who are there,” she said. “So I can help facilitate that.”

And she’s passionate about making sure design is accessible. She has eight presentations scheduled throughout the Arrowhead Home & Builders Show.
