On Thursday evening, folks at a Better In Our Backyard networking event heard from a leader from the Eagle Mine.
Darby Stacey is the managing director of the mine. He shared his perspective with the group, which has been waiting for years to see copper nickel mining on the Range.
“Eagle went through a long period of time of start and stop on the project. I was involved at that time, and you do wonder if it’s ever going to happen. One thing that resonates with me, is you’re having to tell the public a lot of promises, and your employees a lot of promises. You don’t really have a chance to deliver on them until you get into operation. That’s what I’m most proud of now. It’s worth it to be able to deliver on those promise you made, it’s worth sticking with it, ” he told us.
“Good plans, robust designs, it can be done. Good people, empowered people. It can be done right,” he added.
The Eagle Mine is in the UP of Michigan, and is the nation’s only nickel mine. They also produce copper, and cobalt is a byproduct as well. It’s been running for nine years now, and employs 470 people.
There are several projects in Minnesota, including NewRange Copper Nickel, Twin Metals, and Talon Metals.
