MSHA leader reflects on the progress made

Leader of MSHA weighs in on progress made for health and safety of miners

Reflection from the leader of MSHA about progress made.

The leader of MSHA is preparing his office for a transition, with the Trump administration in the wings.

Assistant Secretary Chris Williamson has been proud to lead the office. He said he’s enjoyed the time he’s spent in Minnesota, whether it was at conferences or visits to the mines themselves.

He told us, “I’ve had some really good, meaningful conversations with miners and the MSHA staff there. We owe it to them to protect their safety and health.”

Williamson said President Biden visited the MSHA office recently, and mentioned the silica rule, which Williamson is also proud of. It’s aimed at limiting exposure of the dust.

There’s been about a 30% reduction in fatalities in 2024, he said. They’ve also worked at rebuilding the staff, to make sure there is enough people to help with inspections.
