U.S. Steel celebrates Reading Champions at North Star Elementary
An exciting moment at North Star Elementary in Virginia. All four 3rd grade classes gathered in the commons area on Thursday morning for a celebration for completing the Reading Champions program.
Reading Champions is a partnership between U.S. Steel and the Pittsburgh Penguins, and encourages kids to read 20 minutes a day. That’s the same number of minutes in an NHL period.
Classes are provided 25 books about different topics like teamwork, hockey, and penguins.
Teachers shared they had so much fun with their students, keeping track of the minutes.
In the end, Mrs. Andrews class won the competition, clocking in over 43,000 minutes!
The program started in 2021. North Star is the first school in Minnesota to participate.
All the students got stickers and little blue hard hats. Plus, they earned MVP status in the competition, and got Pittsburgh Penguin jerseys and hats, too.
