Mary Skorich
Multimedia Journalist / Sports Reporter
Mary Skorich joined the WDIO team on May 2024 after graduating college from Concordia College in Moorhead. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with her bachelor’s degree in both English Writing and Multimedia Journalism, with a minor in Art and Design.
Mary has lived in Virginia, Minnesota for her whole life. She graduated from Virginia High School in 2021 as one of the final graduating classes before the Rock Ridge merger.
Sports have played a large role in Mary’s life; she began her tennis career at 3 years old when the Virginia Indoor Tennis and Pickleball Courts was built. She played for the Blue Devils for six years, beginning her varsity career as a seventh grader. Mary had the opportunity to experience four Minnesota State Team Tournaments with the Blue Devils, and took third in the Section 7A individual singles tournament in both ninth and tenth grade.
Mary continued her tennis career with the Concordia Cobbers, playing two singles and one doubles for the team. She also continues to play softball every summer in Virginia’s slow pitch league.
Music has also been a passion for Mary since she was a little girl. Mary began her theatre career in fourth grade with the Lyric Center and continued at Virginia High School; performing in Aida, Once Upon a Mattress, The Little Mermaid, Bye Bye Birdie, and the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. She also worked with Mesabi Musical Theatre in their recent productions of Matilda and Willy Wonka.
Mary also took part in choir, being accepted into the ACDA Minnesota 7th and 8th grade SSA Honor choirs, along with the Honors Performance Series SSA Honor Choir in New York 2 years in a row.
Mary began college with a major in English Writing, having found a comfort in storytelling throughout her life. After taking required journalism courses her first year, she found a new avenue of interest in Multimedia Journalism and decided to add a second major to match. She participated in Concordia’s own student run broadcasting station CordOnAir, and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of learning new writing and storytelling methods.
“I knew I wanted to be closer to my family after graduation, so I am extremely lucky that I can now call WDIO home!”
