#18 UMD men’s hockey drops season opener in overtime
The much anticipated UMD men’s hockey season opener was spoiled by Bemidji State, as the Beavers scored in overtime to upset #18 UMD, 4-3 on their home ice.
The Bulldogs were almost immediately facing an uphill climb, as the Beavers were on the board just under two minutes into the contest.
UMD freshman Jayson Shaugabay would have an answer at the tail end of the period though, as he found the back of the net with just 1.1 seconds until the first intermission. It was not only his first collegiate goal, but also the first points for Zam and Max Plante, who tallied assists on the goal.
In the second period trailing 2-1, Shaugabay was once again the answer, as he scored to tie the game at 2-2, however the Bulldogs would enter the third period down 3-2.
In the third period, Zam Plante scored off the rebound to tie the game at 3-3, his first collegiate goal.
In overtime though, the Beavers would break through and score, giving UMD a loss in their first game of the year.
The Bulldogs will look to bounce back on Sunday against the University of Manitoba.
