Bulldog softball swings to season’s first NSIC sweep over Bemidji State
The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) softball team earned their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) sweep of the season Wednesday defeating Bemidji State University (BSU) 6-3 then 4-1 in a home doubleheader at Malosky Stadium.
In game one, UMD scored once in the first and third innings before piling on four runs in the fourth to lead 6-0. The Beavers responded in the fifth scoring three runs of their own, but the Bulldogs’ defense held strong to close out the game on top 6-3. UMD’s Morgan McMillan recorded three hits and three RBI, while Taryn Christopher had one run, one hit and two RBI. On the circle, starting pitcher Allison Luoma threw four strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
In game two, the Bulldogs opened the scoring in the first off a solo home run from Serena Timmer. UMD scored another run in the second, then two more in the fourth for the 4-0 win. Timmer and Khendal Johnson each finished with one run, one hit and one RBI apiece. Starting pitcher Allyssa Williams threw two strikeouts over 6.1 innings.
UMD improves to 22-10 overall, and 2-2 in NSIC play. They next visit Wayne State for a doubleheader Friday. First pitches from Wayne, Nebraska are set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
