CSS rallies to defeat Saint Mary's in game one of baseball doubleheader

The College of St. Scholastica (CSS) baseball team split their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader with Saint Mary’s University Tuesday at Wade Stadium. CSS rallied to take game one 4-1, but dropped game two 9-3.

In game one, the Cardinals scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. In the fifth inning CSS finally broke onto the board thanks to a Luke Krull single scoring Jake Schelonka. Jack Tiemann followed that up with his own single scoring Damian Tamayo Vera to take the 2-1 lead. Krull then stole home for the 3-1 lead, and Sam Shopbell drove in Tiemann to complete the 4-1 comeback all in the fifth inning. On the mound for the Saints, Payton Jeffries threw five strikeouts in 6.0 innings.

In game two, Saint Mary’s scored two runs in the third and two more in the fifth to lead 4-0. CSS scored two in the bottom of the fifth to trail 4-2, and would trail 6-3 after the sixth. The Cardinals added three more runs in the top of the ninth to secure the 9-3 win. Levi Stubbles led the Saints offensively with one run, one hit, and two RBI, while Schelonka tallied one run and three hits. CSS had five different pitchers hit the mound combining for 12 strikeouts.

CSS (11-14) next hosts Northland College in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Wade Stadium.
