Duluth boxing coach lands spot in new Team Combat League
Boxers continue to make names for themselves coming out of the Northland, and now a Jungle Boy Boxing Gym coach has been accepted into a new nationwide league. Alissa Boltz of Duluth has earned a spot in the Team Combat League with the Atlanta Attack.
“It’s a little different than a normal professional boxing debut, because we’re within a team. Typically, each boxer has one or two rounds. Then all of the boxer scores kind of go into a team score, and that will depend which team wins or not,” Boltz explained.
Now it its third season, Team Combat League matches feature 24 three-minute rounds. Twenty four fighters appear in each match, and are categorized into eight weight classes. Boltz had been following the league on social media, and finally had the opportunity to tryout.
“Ironically, I was going down to Atlanta for a marathon, because my goal is to run a marathon in every state, and Atlanta Attack had their team tryouts when I was down there. So I went to the tryouts on a Friday and then ran my marathon on a Sunday,” Boltz said.
Zach Walters, owner of Jungle Boy Boxing Gym, said the Team Combat League is a great opportunity for boxers to cross over from the amateur ranks to the pro ranks.
“You get a lot of activity, a lot of exposure. It doesn’t count against any one record because you’re only fighting one round. Now the crazy part is, these rounds are really intense. You get three minutes to establish a case and a 24 round chunk for your team,” Walters explained.
There are currently 12 squads in the Team Combat League across the U.S. Boltz’s Atlanta Attack are next in action April 6 visiting the Nashville Smash. For the full schedule, Click here.
