Duluth East boys hockey skates past Denfeld in Section 7AA quarterfinals
The puck dropped on the Section 7AA boys hockey quarterfinals in Minnesota on Tuesday.
Third seeded Duluth East defeated sixth seeded Duluth Denfeld 5-1 in their first section tournament meeting, with Denfeld opting up from Section 7A after last season. The Greyhounds’ Thomas Gunderson scored two goals with three assists, Wyatt Peterson tallied two goals and two assists, and Luke Anderson recorded one goal and one assist between the first two periods. The Hunters scored the sole goal of the third period from Jacob Feiro.
Denfeld finishes their season 11-13-2. Duluth East (10-15-1) advances to face second seeded Andover in the semifinals. Puck drop is set for Saturday, February 24 at 2 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena. This will be a rematch of the 2023 Section 7AA title game, where Andover won 7-2 to advance to state.
Andover defeated No. 7 Duluth Marshall 6-1 in their quarterfinal.
The other semifinal will be No. 1 Grand Rapids versus No. 4 Rock Ridge. Grand Rapids defeated No. 9 Cambridge-Isanti 9-0. The Wolverines pulled off a miracle marathon victory over No. 5 Forest Lake winning 4-3 in the fourth overtime at Virginia’s Iron Trail Motors Event Center.
Grand Rapids and Rock Ridge will faceoff Saturday at 12 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena. The championship game is Thursday, Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena.
