On Tuesday the top-seeded Esko girls soccer team repeated as Section 7A champions shutting out second seeded Duluth Marshall 4-0 at Esko School Fields.
Britta Koski scored twice, while Kaitlyn McConnel and Jordyn Randa also scored. Esko is now returning to the state tournament for the second season in a row.
“Well, this is a goal that we’ve been working towards since the season ended last year,” senior Gwendolyn Lilly said. “The chemistry on this team is insane, we’re together all the time. They say soccer teams are family for the next eight weeks, but we’re a family all year round.”
“They were able to continue to learn. About halfway through the season, we were able to start learning different formations. I just, I don’t know, they’re so good,” head coach Sharon Lahti said.
Esko will look to push further than their state quarterfinal finish last year. The state tournament kicks off October 24.
Also on Tuesday, Esko’s Gwen Lilly was named a Class A Ms. Soccer finalist. The winner will be announced Sunday, October 22.
