Excitement awaits UMD’s homecoming game against Southwest Minnesota State

University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) football looks towards Saturday night’s homecoming matchup against Southwest Minnesota State University, when fans and alumni pack the stands to cheer on the Bulldogs.

“You know for our military appreciation game, anytime we’re at home in the Malosky Stadium we expect to have a good crowd. And then the crowd on our side to be able to put energy into the stadium and create a home field advantage for us. So, it’s homecoming this weekend a lot of pride and tradition in this football program from our fans from our alumni from everybody coming back and it’s an important thing for us to make sure that we play well and play a sound football,” said UMD head football coach Curt Wiese.

Saturday’s game also could make history for Wiese, who is currently one win away from tying former head coach Bob Nielson who tallied 100 wins over his nine seasons with the Bulldogs. Wiese earned his 100th career coaching wins last season, and currently sits at 108 career wins.

“I mean homecoming we’re gonna have the juices flowing a little bit, so we’ll have a good crowd and kind of excited to get that going,” said Andrew Klopp, UMD fifth year linebacker.

In week one, UMD football shut down the Mary Marauders for under 100 yards of total offense and shut out Southwest Minnesota State in their 2023 season meeting.
