Former UMD football coach & QB James S. Malosky Jr. passes away
Former Bulldog football coach and player James S. Malosky Jr. passed away Tuesday in Houston, according to the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). He was 58 years old.
Malosky Jr. was the son of Bulldog coaching legend James S. Malosky. A quarterback, Malosky Jr. played for UMD from 1984-1987, before becoming a staff member. First he served as a student assistant coach, then moved up to an assistant coach, and became an interim co-head coach for the 1999 season.
Malosky Jr. was a four-year letterman, part of three Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) championship squads (1985, 1986, 1987) and two NSIC All-Conference teams (1986, 1987). He also served as co-captain his senior season in 1987. That year, he had 1,770 yards in total offense (397 rushing yards, 1,373 passing yards, and 27 touchdowns. During his career, Malosky Jr. completed 212 passes in 455 attempts for 2,866 yards and 41 touchdowns. His 2,866 yards still ranks seventh on the Bulldogs’ all-time passing chart. Malosky Jr. later signed a free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys.
Malosky Jr. first joined UMD’s coaching staff in 1990 as a student assistant, after earning a bachelor of applied arts in physical education. From 1993-1999 he would serve as the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator, then take over as an interim co-head coach in 1999 leading UMD to a 4-7 season. He went on to serve as a graduate assistant tight ends coach at Rice University, and was an assistant coach at the University of South Dakota.
